ITINERARY
Day 1: Arequipa – Base Camp
We leave from Arequipa at 8 am going past the National Reserve of Salinas y Aguada Blanca , where the vicunas (with big black eyes), llamas and alpacas graze on the desert ground. We then arrive at the highest Lookout of the volcanoes, Patapampa (4850m), where we have a panoramic view of the snowy volcanoes Ampato, Sabancaya, Hualcahualca and Mismi. Then we continue driving our 4WD truck through Sallaly up to the first campsite that is located at 5200masl. on the slope of Ampato volcano. It is essential that you have already acclimatised to high altitude before attempting this climb.
Day 2: Base Camp I - High Camp II
This day early in the morning we ascend to the second camp. . The climbing up is between 4 and 5 hours . Light lunch at camp. Resting afternoon enjoying the breathtaking views of the Andean sunset.
There we prepare our dinner and we stay overnight (5400masl).
Day 3: High Camp II - Ampato Summit - Arequipa
The day third we will get to the top (6380m) after 6 hours of climbing. Then we go back down which only takes 3 hours, to camp II. Then continue down to our base campsite for another couple of hours where our vehicle awaits for us. Finally we return to Arequipa city.
